Football
It's a beautiful Saturday morning as the sun brightly shines and a slight breeze makes it's way over the football field where your MVP is running out of the end zone, ready for the game. They make it to their sideline, cheering, jumping up and down, champing and the bit to start. Your MVP runs out and lines up for the kickoff...
...a great moment for an image!
Your problem? The field rope between you and them, not to mention the amount of space from where your standing to where they are on the field. You shrug, whip out your point-and-shoot, focus and start clicking anyway...
Got It!!
You wait a moment, then your shot comes up in the viewfinder of your camera.
You squint at it and realize that it's not quite what you wanted...
It seems that you caught an image of half the field...and you can't see the expression that you wanted to get!
Is that your MVP on the field, or one of their teammates...?
The Challenges
This is the challenge that most -- if not all -- parents are faced with. Too far away, bad angles, and a lack of equipment meant for sports photography. The first two of this trifecta are pretty obvious problems but what about the equipment part of this equation? You may ask 'Can't I just drop a grand or less and pick up a DSLR from Best Buy to get the shots I want, images with a professional look and feel?
The short answer...No.
You need to know what lenses to use in what situations.
How to setup your camera.
Where to shoot using your camera setup.
How do you blur/wash the background of an image...how do you take it out.
How to shoot thru a facemask to capture facial expressions.
These are just a few of the things to have a grasp of before you can begin to use any equipment, professional grade or otherwise. Just remember, there is a reason that a consumer level cameras is not considered to be anywhere near as good as a professional level camera.
